 The Stars Between Us

Elliot sat on the weathered park bench, his sketchbook resting on his lap. The twilight sky was painted in hues of orange and pink, but his focus was fixed on the girl sitting by the fountain across the path. Her name was Maya, though she didn’t know he existed. Every evening, she came here, headphones in her ears, sketching in her own little notebook.

He had noticed her weeks ago, always absorbed in her art, her hair framing her face in soft waves. There was something magnetic about her—how she seemed to inhabit a world of her own, untouched by the bustling city around her.

Tonight, Elliot decided he couldn’t let another day pass without speaking to her. Gathering his courage, he closed his sketchbook and crossed the path.

“Hey,” he said, his voice steady but his heart racing.

Maya looked up, startled at first. Then she pulled her headphones down, her lips curving into a polite smile. “Hi.”

“I, uh, noticed you come here a lot,” he began, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m Elliot. I draw too.” He held up his sketchbook as proof.

Her eyes lit up. “Really? Let me see.”

Elliot hesitated but handed her the book. She flipped through the pages, her smile growing wider. “These are amazing! You’re really talented.”

“Thanks,” he replied, his cheeks warming. “What about yours?”

Maya laughed lightly. “Mine are nothing compared to this, but sure.” She handed him her notebook.

Elliot leafed through her sketches—scenes of the park, whimsical animals, and intricate patterns. “These are incredible,” he said honestly. “You’ve got such a unique style.”

For the first time, Maya seemed shy. “Thanks. Drawing is kind of my escape.”

“Same,” Elliot admitted. “It’s like the world makes more sense on paper.”

They talked for hours, the sun setting and the stars emerging one by one. Maya told him about her dream of illustrating children’s books, while Elliot shared his ambition of becoming an animator. It felt like they had known each other forever.

As the night grew colder, Maya stood and stretched. “I should head home,” she said reluctantly. “But this was really nice.”

“Yeah,” Elliot agreed. “Maybe... we could do this again?”

Maya smiled. “I’d like that.” She scribbled her number on a torn page from her notebook and handed it to him.

The days that followed were filled with shared sketches, laughter, and long conversations under the stars. Elliot and Maya became inseparable, inspiring each other to chase their dreams.

Years later, as they stood together at their first joint art exhibit, surrounded by their work, Elliot leaned closer to Maya and whispered, “Do you remember the first thing you said to me?”

She grinned. “I said your sketches were amazing.”

“And I said yours were incredible,” he added, taking her hand. “Turns out, we make a pretty good team.”

And under the same starry sky that brought them together, they knew they had found something rare—love and a shared dream that would last a lifetime.
